Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has spoken out after a chaotic incident forced him to flee a funeral service in Limuru, Kiambu County.
The Thursday event turned violent when a group of attackers disrupted the proceedings, leaving mourners—including women and children—injured.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Gachagua alleged that the government’s recent withdrawal of his security detail may have left him vulnerable to the attack.
"The government recently removed the remaining aspects of my security, a move I did not challenge despite the expectation that former leaders at my level should retain some level of protection. However, it seems this decision was intended to expose me to such incidents," he stated.

The funeral was for a young man, Erastus Nduati. According to Gachagua, armed individuals stormed the event, wielding weapons like stones, machetes, and iron bars.
"While preparing to lay the young man to rest, a group of armed goons attacked mourners indiscriminately, targeting even women and children. As I headed to my car, they pursued me and attacked my vehicle with stones and iron bars," Gachagua recounted.
Photos accompanying his statement showed a vehicle damaged during the incident.
Gachagua criticized the government, claiming complicity in the attack. "This is a sad reflection on the state of affairs in our country. It’s disheartening to see a grieving family forced to flee while mourning their loved one," he said.
The incident has also sparked controversy, with Gachagua’s allies alleging that police abducted former MP Peter Mwathi following the chaos.
