WhatsApp is set to allow users to edit messages to match a feature provided by its competitors like Signal and Telegram.

WhatsApp says messages can be edited for up to 15 minutes after being sent.

The instant-messaging service is part of US technology giant Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.

According to the BBC, the feature will be available to WhatsApp's 2 billion users in the coming weeks. It counts India as its largest market, with 487 million users.

"From correcting a simple misspelling to adding extra context to a message, we're excited to bring you more control over your chats," WhatsApp said in a blog post on Monday.

"All you need to do is long-press on a sent message and choose 'Edit' from the menu for up to fifteen minutes after," it added.

The word "edited" will be added to the subject line to let receivers know that a message has been changed. However, they won't be informed of the modifications made to the message over time.

Following the feature's release by Telegram and Signal, WhatsApp made its announcement.

The social networking site Facebook first made the edit feature available approximately ten years ago.

At that time, Facebook disclosed that over half of its users visited the website via mobile devices, which are more prone to typos.
