Following a string of five consecutive league defeats, Dutch powerhouse Ajax managed to climb off the bottom of the Eredivisie with a 2-0 victory at home against FC Volendam on Thursday.

The four-time European champions, boasting 36 domestic titles and holding the record as the Netherlands' most successful team, secured just their second win of the season. This victory came courtesy of second-half goals from Steven Bergwijn and Chuba Akpom.

Their previous league victory dates back to the opening day of the season on August 12. It was an auspicious beginning for newly appointed head coach John van ‘t Schip, who took over this week following the dismissal of Maurice Steijn in October.

With eight points in the 18-team league, Ajax now sit in 15th place. Despite having a game in hand, they trail league leaders PSV Eindhoven by a significant margin of 22 points.

Ajax will face Heerenveen in the league on Sunday, followed by a Europa League clash at home against Brighton on November 9.
