A ship carrying bulk white maize from Matola Port in Mozambique is expected to dock at the Port of Mombasa.

The cargo comes at a time when maize prices are at their highest.

Prices of maize, the staple food, are currently high in the country attributed to higher demand for the commodities despite maize supply being scarce.

A protracted drought that has affected the nation's corn-producing regions is the cause of the current maize shortfall.

Nowadays, a two-kilogram packet of maize flour costs between Kes191 and Kes200.

But, the supply chain will be strengthened by the commodity's arrival, which will assist drive down the commodity's price.

Bulk wheat will once again be delivered to the port.

Just last month, Ukraine sent 30,000 metric tonnes of wheat to the nation to aid hunger and drought-stricken households.

The gift is a part of the humanitarian "Grain from Ukraine" (GfU) programme started by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

With financial backing from the governments of the United Kingdom, Norway, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, and the UN World Food Program (WFP), the shipment was made possible.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification said that over 5.4 million people in Kenya will likely experience acute food insecurity between March and June.
