A man has been charged with assault and obnoxious behavior after it was claimed that he verbally and physically assaulted a police officer assigned to the Drive Inn Police Post in Roysambu, Nairobi.

On October 8, 2023, Erick Ochieng is said to have committed the crimes after traveling to the relevant police station to get information regarding a report he had previously made at the precinct.

Ochieng requested a speedy resolution to the issue. Still, Corporal Peter Karanja, the officer manning the desk, told him that because the report's investigations were not yet complete, the suspect implicated in the incident could not yet be arrested.

Ochieng allegedly produced a commotion at the police station after being offended by Corporal Karanja's comments, according to a report in the Nation newspaper.

The accused reportedly prevented the officer from leaving the desk before hitting him with a door as he tried to defuse the situation by leaving Ochieng alone.

After the event, Ochieng was reportedly taken into prison by Karanja's coworkers due to public outcry from the area.

Later, the policeman was taken urgently to a nearby clinic for medical attention.

On Thursday, Ochieng disputed the accusations before appearing before Makadara Law Court Principal Magistrate Irene Gichobi. He was then freed on a Ksh.40,000 cash bond.

The trial date has been scheduled for March 13, 2024, and the case will be discussed on November 28.
