Police have seized a consignment of more than 2,500 bottles of counterfeit spirits and 40 litres of ethanol in Juja, Kiambu County, following the ongoing crackdown on high-level tax evasion by liquor dealers.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), a contingent of officers raided a house within Kenyatta Road area, Chai estate, where they also recovered 24,000 pieces of counterfeit Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) stamps.
“Over 2,500 bottles of counterfeit spirits destined for the local market were recovered, following a meticulous operation conducted by detectives from the Economic and Commercial Crimes Unit and officials from the Kenya Revenue Authority,” DCI said.
DCI said the counterfeit liquor had been packaged in branded bottles that are popular among local joints in the area including, Smart Vodka, Supa Vodka, Blue Ice and People Vodka.
The sleuths have since launched a probe into the source of the ethanol and the fake KRA stamps.
