On Thursday, a 47-year-old Tana River County head teacher was sentenced to 15 years in prison for defiling a 16-year-old student.

Athman Mohammed Jillo, the accused, allegedly enticed the minor with the promise of a high grade in the recently completed Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

"Hola Resident Magistrate Hon. Benson Kabanga sentenced him to a lengthy jail term after ruling that the prosecution had proved the case beyond any reasonable doubt," said the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in a statement.

"The prosecution, led by Prosecution Counsel Michuki Alfred, called eight (8) witnesses who testified and established a case against the accused person."

While delivering the verdict, Justice Kabanga stated that by committing the offense, Jillo failed to fulfill his duty to protect his students from any harm or abuse.
