A 45-year prison term has been imposed on a Tanzanian national who was found to have drugs on him while visiting Mombasa.

In March 2021, Maimuna Jumanne Amir was arrested at Moi International Airport and found in possession of 5,389 grams of heroin valued at Ksh.16,167,000.

Amir had hidden the drug haul in a black bag, according to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

She was given a sentence of 35 years in prison for drug trafficking and an extra ten years for drug possession by Mombasa Law Courts Principal Magistrate Martin Rabera.

The alternative fine for the ten-year sentence is Ksh. 48 million.

"The accused was fined Ksh.48,501,000 (three times the value of the drugs in her possession), in default, served 10 years in prison for the offence of trafficking in narcotic drugs, contrary to Section 4(a) of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act No. 4 of 1994," stated the ODPP.

"She was also sentenced to 35 years in prison. The accused committed the offence jointly with others not before the court, on 14th March 2021 at Moi International Airport in Changamwe Sub-county within Mombasa County."

Following the presentation of sixteen witnesses, Magistrate Rabera declared during the ruling that the prosecution, headed by Barbara Sombo, had proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
