Angry residents in Kisii county descended on a GSU officer accused of multiple violent robberies in the area, severely injuring him.
The officer, identified as Constable Edgar Opollo, a General Service Unit officer, is suspected of stealing a smartphone from a Kisii University student on February 3 and being beaten up by an angry mob.
His patrol mates rescued him.
"After conducting an investigation, the officers discovered that the suspect had stolen a smartphone from a Kisii University student, and the phone was discovered while the injured suspect was being frisked. "He was arrested and escorted to the station," stated the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in a statement released on Tuesday.

The officer is also related to an armed gang that looted a local shop for Ksh.40,000 on January 2.
According to detectives, the crime was captured on CCTV, which showed three robbers with their faces partially concealed. Two of them were armed, one with an AK47 rifle and the other with a pistol.
“The rifle bearer had police fatigues on, but it was not apparent that he was a police officer. Following Opollo's arrest, an identification parade was conducted where the supermarket owner successfully identified him as one of the robbers who accosted him,” the DCI said.
Police are still looking for the two others.
The GSU officer is being treated under police guard at a Kisii hospital while awaiting interrogation and trial. He will be charged with robbery with violence, according to the investigating agency.
