Two Nigerian nationals who had been detained for the killing of Rita Waeni, a student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), have been released by Makadara Law Court.

The police had detained John Bull Asbour and William Ovie Opia since January 22, 2024.

For the police to finish their investigation into the case, the court had granted permission for the two to be detained.

While releasing the suspects, Magistrate Agnes Mwangi directed that they appear before the investigators once a week.

According to the prosecution, inquiries are still ongoing.

On January 14, 2024, Waeni's body was discovered in a short-term rental apartment in Nairobi's Roysambu neighborhood. Her suspected killer had severed her body, leaving her head missing.

On January 21, the head would subsequently be discovered at a dam in Kiambu County.

On February 5, 2024, Waeni was laid to rest in a private ceremony.
