At Kirinyaga County's Kerugoya Referral Hospital, a middle-aged man is battling for his life after consuming an illegal brew.

It is reported that the man lost his vision after drinking the drink on Friday morning at Kangai village. He was initially taken to the Kandongu dispensary in the Mwea West sub-county and then to the county referral hospital.

There was drama at the dispensary as locals, who believed that the county government was not doing enough to stop the sale of illegal beer in the area, gathered in large numbers to protest.

The incident coincided with a crisis meeting on how to address the problem of illicit alcohol consumption in the area, called by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki.

"How come they are selling deadly liquor while the Interior Cabinet Secretary is meeting with the security team ten meters away," Jinaro Njamumo Mutithi Ward MCA said.

At Kandongu village in Kirinyaga, two people are said to have passed away on Thursday night after consuming what is thought to be illicit alcohol.

After consuming the lethal liquor, which was allegedly sold out of a police station nearby where it was being kept as an exhibit, more than 20 people died in Kangai and Kandongu.

On Saturday, the burials of fifteen of the victims are scheduled.
