A 30-year-old man was taken into custody by Kirinyaga police on Thursday night after he killed his 56-year-old mother with a knife during a fight over coffee plants grown on a plot of land.

Kirinyaga West Sub-County Police Commander Moses Koskei confirmed the incident and said that the suspect, Murimi Maina, was caught trying to sell his phone to raise money for a transport fare so he could leave the county. Maina was taken into custody in Kagumo, Kirinyaga Central Constituency.

"He is currently being held at Baricho Police Station," said Koskei.

Maina, a butcher by profession, supposedly came down on his mother, Jane Nyambura Maina, because she had destroyed twenty coffee plants he had grown on her property.

Before killing his mother with a machete, he is said to have threatened her with dire consequences for her actions.

After carrying out the vicious attack, he later left the scene of the crime.
