Four men have been sentenced to serve 30 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in Kibera.
The inmates, Emmanuel Mutemi, Kennedy Irungu, Peter Mwaura, and Ben Thuo, are believed to have committed the crime on the night of the New Year in 2022.
Kibera Law Courts Principal Magistrate Zainab Abdul delivered the sentence, ruling that the prosecution established the case beyond reasonable doubt through the testimony of nine witnesses.
The testimony and materials put the four at the crime site.
"The magistrate also noted that the offence of Defilement has become so rampant in Kibra hence, the sentence should be a deterrent to those intending to pursue that direction in society," the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions noted in a statement on Thursday.
According to court documents, the victim was returning home after a church ceremony to herald in the new year on January 1, 2022, at midnight, when the four guys approached them.
She informed the court that her buddy managed to flee, but she was apprehended by the guys, who brought her to a nearby abandoned mud hut and took turns defiling her from midnight to dawn.
"She further told the court that they threatened to slit her throat had she tried to scream for help," added the ODPP.
"She added that she managed to identify the perpetrators through the illumination of street lights and recognized them since they were people, she could see in the neighborhood on a daily basis."
