Police officers arrested a prisoner who escaped detention at the Nakuru Level 5 hospital.

Stanley Cheruiyot, 29, was convicted of sexual assault and is serving a life term at Nakuru G.K. Prison.

He allegedly fled from the hospital's male orthopedic unit, where he was scheduled for corrective arm surgery later this week.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Cheruiyot was handed away by Molo's Keepleft region inhabitants before being apprehended on Tuesday evening and sent to prison.

The investigation agency said that members of the public saw a man who did not appear to be a police officer, wearing shackles at the waist at 3 o'clock.

Detectives said Cheruiyot was carrying a backpack with a phone, a pair of inmates' uniforms, and hospital records.

Cheruiyot was carrying a rucksack containing a phone, two convicts' clothes, and healthcare paperwork, authorities added.

According to reports, Cheruiyot allegedly discharged himself and left the hospital unnoticed via the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC).

"While being processed for the operation Monday morning, the malefactor managed to master the cuffs tied to his hospital bed, vanishing into thin air to the bewilderment of his keepers," DCI said.

Police are investigating how he "got his arm dislocated so bad to require an urgent operation," and they believe he "arm-twisted himself" to escape jail.

The convict will face a charge of escape from legal custody.
