Four senior officials from Taita Taveta County have been arrested in connection with the alleged embezzlement of Ksh. 7 million, reportedly intended for a First World War commemoration event.

Among those arrested are Thomas Jumwa, Economic Advisor to Governor Andrew Mwadime; former County Secretary Liverson Mghendi; former Finance Chief Officer Leonard Langat; and Christine Wakera, Chief Officer of Trade, Tourism, and Cooperatives Development.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) made the arrests, and the officials are currently held at Mombasa Central Police Station. Investigations revealed that the event, allegedly commemorating World War I, was neither included in the county’s procurement plan nor budgeted for during the 2022/2023 financial year.

The EACC noted that the procurement process was riddled with irregularities, including payments to suppliers who did not provide goods or services. Additionally, the documentation used to authorize these payments was forged.

The suspects are set to appear before the Mombasa Anti-Corruption Court. They face charges of abuse of office, forgery, conspiracy to commit corruption, and engaging in an unplanned project.

The EACC also plans to initiate civil proceedings to recover the misappropriated funds.
