A woman suddenly became speechlessness in court after being charged with threatening to kill her friend by sending abusive and threatening messages via WhatsApp.

Hellen Nyambura Njoki appeared before a Nairobi court and abruptly stopped speaking, pretending to be mute. This prompted the duty magistrate to seek clarification from the prosecution on whether the suspect might actually have a speech impairment.

The prosecutor, however, responded by stating that he believed the woman was simply exercising her constitutional right to remain silent.

Hellen faced a criminal charge of using his WhatsApp account to threaten Miriam Athmani Yunus telling her that she had notified the DCI that she was going to take law at hand and kill her.

She was also accused of Cyber harassment where the prosecution alleged that on April 13, 2024 the suspect used very abusive words using her WhatsApp account directing the said words to Miriam Athman.

Appearing before Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe, the suspect remained silent as the Court Assistant read out the six criminal charges against her. This prompted the court to enter a plea of not guilty on her behalf. She was subsequently released on a cash bail of Ksh 150,000.
