Detectives from Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Thursday eliminated two armed gang members accused of terrorizing Kakamega and neighboring counties.

The operation also led to the recovery of an AK47 rifle, 15 rounds of live ammunition, and a stolen Bajaj motorcycle.

According to a DCI statement released on Friday, the suspects were tracked to a rental house in Matungu village after a public tip-off. Acting on intelligence reports, officers from DCI’s Operation Action Team and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau surrounded the hideout, demanding the suspects surrender.

However, the suspects refused to comply. Instead, they cocked their rifle, indicating an intent to engage in a gunfight. The detectives, responding swiftly to the imminent threat, neutralized the duo.

The recovered motorcycle is believed to have been stolen from a police officer who was attacked by a machete-wielding gang in Butere Township on November 12. The officer remains hospitalized in a coma.

The DCI is working to identify the deceased gang members through fingerprinting. The bodies have been moved to the Bungoma County Referral Hospital mortuary for further processing.
