A mother of two abducted brothers is pleading with the government to release her sons, who have been missing since just before Christmas.

Caroline Mutai, the mother of cartoonist Gideon Kibet, also known as Kibet Bull, and Rony Kiplagat, says her family has been living in anguish since the abductions. Kibet, 23, was set to travel abroad for higher education, a chance that now hangs in limbo.

The family’s festive season turned bleak when Kibet was abducted after visiting the office of Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah in Nairobi. His brother Rony had disappeared just days earlier.

“I have been hospitalized due to high blood pressure,” said Caroline, overwhelmed by the distress of her sons’ disappearance.

Kibet Bull, a student at Egerton University in Nakuru, is well-known for his artistic critiques of the government, shared under his ‘Yoko’ moniker on X (formerly Twitter). His art often features satirical silhouettes resembling President William Ruto and other leaders, and his work has gained popularity among government critics.

Caroline insists she was unaware of her son’s political expressions online. “If I knew he was involved in such things, I would have advised him to tone it down,” she said.

The abductions have not only left the family in emotional turmoil but have also jeopardized Kibet’s future. He was set to join a group of 20 young people traveling to Israel for further studies on December 27. Caroline revealed that she took a Ksh.200,000 loan to fund his education.

“There are others at the airport ready to leave, but my son is missing,” she lamented.

The heartbroken mother is now appealing to the government for answers. “Please, government, give me my children,” she said.

Caroline remains hopeful that her sons, part of a growing list of young men reportedly abducted in recent times, will be returned safely. Hope, she says, is the only thing keeping her going.
