A rapid and coordinated manhunt has resulted in the arrest of seven suspects believed to be connected to the fatal shooting of a police officer in Nakuru.
The officer lost his life during a patrol in the Free Area of Nakuru Town on Sunday, where he and two colleagues were ambushed. The two surviving officers sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical care at Nakuru Level Five Hospital.
Following the tragic incident, the National Police Service (NPS) launched a joint operation involving detectives from various units. According to official reports, three suspects were apprehended at the crime scene. The remaining four—identified as William Nyairi Rioba, Nyari Nyamwara Maluke, Emmanuel Mwita, and Catherine Nkatha Zakayo—were later captured at a lodging in the Tahidi area.
Investigations led authorities to a hidden location where an AK-47 rifle, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered. Additional items seized from the suspects included four mobile phones, several SIM cards, a motorcycle, and bus tickets dated May 25, 2025, bearing the name Emmanuel Mwita and indicating travel routes to Kehancha and Kisii.
Further examination of the crime scene revealed three 7.62mm spent cartridges and one 9mm cartridge. One of the injured officers had also suffered a panga cut to the left hand during the attack.
