On May 1, 2011, the nation was shocked by the death of NTV reporter Sarah Wambui Kabiru. According to the record, the journalist had issues with her husband Mr. Dola Otieno, over her decision to play loud music one Sunday morning. Sarah felt disturbed together with her 2- year-old son then.
Dola, also a former journalist, while testifying before High court Judge Roselyne Korir in 2017, said his wife was infuriated by the loud music that woke her and the son.
Wambui picked up the scissors and aimed them at Mr. Dola. As he struggled to snatch them, they both fell onto the bed, where the TV reporter hit her head on the wooden headboard. The late journalist's last words were, "Sasa Ona Venye Umeniumiza."
Mr. Otieno is serving a 10-year sentence for an offense that was initially murder but has now been reduced to manslaughter.
Being separated from his son for 11 years and missing his mother's funeral are painful things he has to live with.
Currently, Mr. Dola is advocating for GBV through his organization, Rekebisha trust. He explains that his main agenda after leaving prison is to make peace with his in-laws and find time to sit with his in-laws and find time to sit with his son, who is now 13 years old, and explain to him what transpired.
Otieno is also looking forward to reconciling with his in-laws since, according to him, Sarah's family was also his family.
