The death toll from the Shakahola disaster has risen to 243 as one of the rescued victims died at the Malindi Sub County Hospital.

Dr Johansen Oduor, the chief government pathologist, verified that 36 autopsies were performed on Tuesday.

Last Monday, the postmortem examination of the 129 bodies retrieved during the second part of the exhumation procedure began.

Odour stated that only 16 bodies remained to finish the exercise and open the way for phase three of the exhumation.

Interior CS Kindiki Kithure has stated that murder detectives have discovered fresh mass graves.

The victims were victims of cult-like teachings by Paul Mackenzie Nthenge, head of the Good News International Church, who allegedly enticed his followers into starving themselves to death to "find God."
