Detectives in Nairobi have opened an investigation after one of their own was shot and murdered during a robbery in Nairobi's Kayole neighbourhood on Tuesday night.

The thieves also shot his wife in the leg during the incident. According to a police statement, the officer, Constable David Mayaka of the Makadara Directorate of Criminal Investigations, was driving home with his wife when the event occurred.

According to police, the couple stopped by the roadside at about 10 p.m. to patch a puncture on their car when three males on motorcycles rode up and offered to assist them in changing the tyre.

"The three turned out to be thugs who tried to rob them, and as a confrontation ensued, the officer reached for his gun, which was in the car," police stated.

The gang mounted their motorcycles, and one of them opened fire, striking the cop in the stomach.

They also shot his wife, Hellen Kemunot, in the thigh as she fled for safety.

According to police, the group escaped without snatching anything from the victims. The number plates on the motorcycle they were riding were folded.

When the police came, they discovered the woman screaming in the car. The two were escorted to the hospital, where the cop died. The woman's condition is stable.

No arrests have been made, according to police, but a team has been formed to track the perpetrators responsible for the shooting.\
