The inquiry started at 2:30 a.m. on August 6 when Salt Lake police were summoned to a local hospital where a 17-year-old girl was being treated for a gunshot wound to her leg. The girl had been driven to the hospital by her pals.

According to arrest records, the girl informed police she was going to a party without her boyfriend, Mahdi, which disturbed him. Mahdi is said to have told the youngster, "if she went without him, there would be trouble."

The girl went to the party near 1400 S. Main without Mahdi, but he arrived shortly afterwards. According to authorities, he demanded that she come and find him. When the girl found Mahdi, "he threatened to hurt her and told her that he was not afraid to punch her in front of everyone," the allegations said.

Later that evening, Mahdi kneeled next to the girl in the back seat of a friend's car. She stated that Mahdi showed her a pistol and asked him if he had taken pictures with the gun. She reported that her ears began to ring, and she realized Mahdi had shot her in the leg.

According to investigators, the girl needed surgery for a shattered femur. Mahdi was apprehended at his South Jordan residence.

Prosecutors have requested that Mahdi be held in the Salt Lake County Jail without the possibility of posting bail pending trial.
