A middle-aged man was arraigned in court accused of posing as a member of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) to extort money from a senior government official.
Laban Mutuku Lola was accused of obtaining Ksh.150,000 from a senior public official identified as James Tama Musyoka on January 5, 2020, in Nairobi, by purporting to be in a position to aid the "smooth" recruitment of his spouse in the NIS.
Mutuku was also charged with impersonating a second time.
According to the EACC, the accused has been on the run since April 24, 2023, when the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) agreed to prosecute him based on the anti-graft body's recommendations.
He was apprehended from his hiding in Umoja 3 Estate and is being held at Kilimani Police Station till his arraignment today.

Mutuku pleaded not guilty before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina and was released on a bond of Ksh.300,000 with a surety of the same amount or Ksh.200,000 cash bail.
The case will be discussed on October 17, 2023.
