Saumu Mbuvi, the eldest daughter of former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has disclosed that she typically wears second-hand clothing. The mother of two made this revelation in response to recent comments made by Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa, which have sparked strong reactions from Kenyans.
According to reports, the legislator proposed that taxes should be increased for individuals wearing clothes costing over Ksh. 10,000 as well as women beauty products such as fake nails.
As per Mr. Didmus, the additional funds generated from this measure should be allocated to increase support for the elderly through the Cash Transfer Program.
The MP made these remarks during his visit to Vihiga, where he was commenting on the 2024 Finance Bill, which has sparked intense debates across the country.
"I want the government to increase taxes to anyone wearing clothes worth more than Ksh 10,000, ladies' products including nails and then be added to the Cash Transfer Program. This can be made possible if MPs avail themselves and we change that into law" he said
In her response, Saumu Mbuvi expressed relief that she would be exempt from the proposed tax increase if the legislator's suggestion were to be adopted into law.
This is because she typically purchases affordable clothing from Gikomba and Toi Market.

Despite her affluent background, the mother of two has revealed her preference for shopping for clothes at Gikomba, arguably the largest second-hand clothes market in East Africa.
In addition to Gikomba, Saumu Mbuvi has disclosed that she purchases clothes from Toi Market in Kibera, another renowned hub for second-hand clothing.
