Throughout history, children have shown remarkable lengths they'll go to protect their mothers. Last week, a 10-year-old boy, Lil Durk's biological son, shot his stepfather to defend his mother during a domestic dispute that may have been over custody.

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, July 1. Surveillance footage captured the moment when Joshua Pippens, the stepfather, argued with the boy's mother. Pippens was dressed in orange, the mother in purple, and the child in red. As Pippens appeared to try to restrain the mother, Durk's son took the gun from Pippens' hip.

The boy then aimed the gun at Pippens as the argument moved from the sidewalk to the street. Amid the continuing dispute, the boy fired one shot, causing Pippens to fall. The footage, which includes audible screams and the gunshot, has been widely circulated, with viewer discretion advised. Pippens later shared his account of the situation from his hospital bed via social media.

"As y'all can see, I was not the aggressor," Joshua Pippens wrote on Instagram. He suggested that the boy's mother had encouraged him to take the gun and shoot. "And y'all also can see how I still had my gun on my hip. He grabbed my gun off my hip following his mom's lead and tried to shoot me and then actually shot me."

Pippens continued to blame the child's mother but expressed care for the boy. "I never in a million years thought a kid I bought 4 wheelers for and paid for football leagues and everything would do this, but he only knows what his mom shows him," Pippens wrote. "I still love him like he's mine." He further criticized the mother, adding, "Whatever makes y'all feel better. That's why I got custody of my kids and she don't. Y'all so internet think [sic] god it was me that took the shot and not her."

Despite the altercation and the presence of multiple family members and children who witnessed the shooting, Pippens stated he would not pursue legal action. "Listen, nobody is going to jail or they would already be there," Pippens wrote. "I'm doing this for rights over my kids. Call me what y'all want.

And on top of that, this was at my momma's, in front of my momma, granny, and more kids. I pray y'all make it through y'all situation that God gon' put y'all through for playing with me."

Lil Durk, who has nine other children, has not yet commented on the shooting. This year has been busy for "The Voice," as he released two singles, "Went Hollywood For A Year" and "Old Days," and appeared on several collaborative projects including Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign's album Vultures 1, 21 Savage's American Dream, Moneybagg Yo's Speak Now, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie's Better Off Alone, and Lyrical Lemonade's compilation All Is Yellow.
