Renowned Benga queen and "Dunia Mbaya" hitmaker, Lillian Auma Aoko, better known as Princess Jully, passed away on October 12, 2024, while receiving treatment at the Migori County Referral Hospital. Her son confirmed that the iconic singer succumbed to multiple organ failure after battling health complications for nearly two months.

Princess Jully's musical journey began in the background of her late husband Julius Okumu’s band, the Jolly Boys, where she worked as a vocalist. Following his death in 1997, she took over leadership of the band, transforming it and propelling it to national fame. Her rise to stardom was inspired by her determination to honor her late husband's legacy while forging her own path in the male-dominated Benga music scene.

Her breakout song, "Dunia Mbaya," became a cultural phenomenon in Kenya. The song, which reflected on the tragic deaths of her friends due to their lifestyle choices, resonated deeply with listeners across the country. It was later adopted as a powerful anthem in the fight against HIV/AIDS, with its message raising awareness about the dangers of the disease and promoting safe practices.

Princess Jully was often compared to Congolese music legend Mbilia Bel, whose style and stage presence inspired her. However, she brought a unique touch to her music, blending traditional Luo rhythms with her distinctive voice to create a sound that captivated audiences far and wide. Over the years, Princess Jully became a beacon of resilience and strength, particularly for women in the music industry, earning her a lasting legacy as one of Kenya's most beloved musicians.

Her passing marks the end of an era, but her music and influence will continue to live on, cherished by fans and musicians who looked up to her groundbreaking career.
