Judy Nyawira, the wife of comedian and scriptwriter Abel Mutua, says she tries to keep her in-laws at a distance as much as possible.
Nyawira explains that she wanted to keep a distant relationship with her in-laws when she married because of a previous terrible experience.
Nyawira claims that after her father died in 2002, her mother's in-laws turned against her, pushing them out of their marriage house and stealing his father's riches.
Judy characterized her mother as a devoted homemaker who planned her father's life to the point where, when he died, he had not yet signed a will.

"Everything they had built with my dad was in his name. So when the in-laws decided to do whatever they did, she had no means to claim,".
Their lives took a sudden turn for the worse after they lost everything, forcing her mother to work as a cleaner at a local market for Sh200 per day.
Judy claims that watching her mother belittled and at the mercy of others inspired her to work hard.
"I would accompany mom to the market where we would sweep for as low as Sh200. Starting from scratch was hard," she says.

"Our breakthrough came when mom got a job in Karatina town. I was in High School at that time and life gradually changed for the better. Mom could now afford to escort me to a supermarket and buy me biscuits, blue band, and other goodies plus give me Sh500 pocket money before I left for school."
This childhood tragedy has stayed with Nyawira to this day, and while she has a good connection with her in-laws, she is mindful that anything might happen.
Nyawira has been married nine years and has a 12-year-old daughter with her husband, Stephanie Mumbua.
