The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Ezekiel Machogu, has instructed that students from Eregi Girls High School who opt for home treatment amidst the outbreak of a perplexing illness should be permitted to depart with their parents.
As of Wednesday, 95 students from the institution were admitted to hospitals, anticipating the results of their laboratory tests.
While health officials suspect that the girls' academic difficulties may be linked to heightened electrolyte levels, indicating potential fluid loss, additional samples have been forwarded to both Kisumu and Nairobi for in-depth examination.

CS Machogu also affirmed that proactive measures have been implemented to address the outbreak, and the Kenya Medical and Research Institute (KEMRI) has mobilized a team to probe into its underlying cause.
Health authorities in the Western region have assured that they are implementing all essential measures to contain the spread of the disease.
Nonetheless, Steven Wandei, the Director of Medical Services for Kakamega County, advised both parents and the school to exercise caution before allowing any additional students to be released.
“We need to find out what is ailing our girls and discover its cause before we can allow the remaining students to go back home and mingle with the other siblings. It will be disastrous if we allow the students to go home when the disease is infectious,” Wandei said, as quoted by the Nation.
