Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah Barasa has called on Kenyans to register in large numbers for the newly launched Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), emphasizing that it offers affordable healthcare coverage for all citizens. Speaking at the official launch of the Social Health Authority (SHA) program in Eldoret, Dr. Barasa highlighted that registered Kenyans will receive free medication from lower-tier public health facilities.

"Once you register, you can visit a health center, receive treatment, and get medication free of charge," she explained. She further added, "By contributing 2.75% of your income, you will have access to services at level 4, 5, and 6 facilities, covering conditions like cancer, diabetes, and others."

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii also expressed confidence that the new insurance scheme would ease the financial burden on families dealing with chronic illnesses. He criticized some leaders for opposing critical government initiatives.

The launch of the SHA program marks the end of the longstanding National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).
