The rollout of the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) is in complete chaos after virtual training sessions meant for public health officials were disrupted by members of the public. The sessions, intended to educate officials on the registration and usage of the new health scheme, were halted after citizens joined the trainings to voice their dissatisfaction.

The SHIF has faced heavy criticism due to not only issues surrounding its implementation but also concerns over the minimal benefits it offers compared to the contributions required for treatments such as dental and optical care. Many Kenyans have taken to social media to express their frustration with the registration process, revealing numerous problems they encountered.

Among the issues raised online is confusion in adding dependents, with some people reporting that the names of dependents added days after registration are incorrect. With these challenges surfacing even before the program's official launch, the deadline for its rollout looms closer. However, the Ministry of Health has yet to clarify how many Kenyans have registered, while also failing to address the system's shortcomings.

A meeting scheduled for Friday, September 27, intended to provide an update on the new health system, was canceled without explanation. Neither the Social Health Authority (SHA) nor the Ministry of Health attended, further fueling concerns that the program’s rollout may have stalled.

As the deadline approaches, the confusion surrounding the SHIF has led to growing mistrust among Kenyans. Despite a last-minute push to raise awareness and encourage registration, many are left doubtful about the scheme's future.
