Rapper Lil Scoom89, also known as Lil Scoom, has tragically passed away, as confirmed by his label, Signal Records. The label released a statement expressing their sorrow, tagging the late rapper's Instagram account: "It is with great sadness that we share the loss of our artist @_lilscoom89. A true creative, Scoom’s passion for music was evident in the near constant flow of songs and videos to his fans. His immense talent, ambitious vision, and quiet determination made him one of a kind and an inspiration to so many. We will miss him dearly. Our thoughts are with his family.
Born Asyrion Hogan, the 18-year-old Lil Scoom was killed in a shooting at the intersection of 89th and Langley, according to Channel 3 Now. Chicago PD responded to calls late Sunday night about a shooting at the location and found Hogan with two gunshot wounds to the chest. He was rushed to the University of Chicago Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police spotted a suspect fleeing the scene with a gun and pursued him on foot. During the chase, the suspect fired at officers, prompting a 10-1 emergency call for immediate backup. Multiple police districts and the CPD SWAT team responded, but the suspect has not been apprehended.
Around the same time, CPD responded to another shooting at 87th and Calumet, where a 16-year-old boy was found with gunshot wounds to his thighs while in an Uber. He was also taken to the University of Chicago Hospital. CPD reports indicate that the teen and Lil Scoom were together when they got into an argument with an unknown man, leading to the shooting.
Lil Scoom's death is part of a grim trend of gun violence in Chicago over the extended July 4th weekend. ABC 7 Chicago reported that 109 people were shot, with 19 fatalities, across the city from midnight Wednesday to midnight Monday.
In a statement, Mayor Brandon Johnson emphasized the severity of the situation: "This is a choice. The choice to kill. The choice to kill women, the choice to kill children, the choice to kill the elderly. These are choices that the offenders made and they calculated. We are holding every single individual accountable for the pain and for the torment that they have caused in this city."
