Once a staunch supporter, former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua has now become one of Ruto’s most vocal critics, sparking speculation about his true motives. During his tenure as Deputy President, he frequently praised Ruto’s leadership, portraying him as a visionary committed to improving the lives of ordinary Kenyans.
He also commended Farouk Kibet, Ruto’s close aide, crediting him for playing a crucial role in their 2022 election victory. However, in a surprising turn, Gachagua now dismisses Farouk, accusing him of misusing power and misleading the president.

Speaking at a recent rally, Gachagua claimed to have inside knowledge of the administration and alleged that corruption within the government is at an all-time high. He criticized Ruto’s allies, accusing them of enriching themselves while Kenyans continue to struggle.
This sudden change in stance has left many questioning his motives, especially given his previous defense of government policies. Notably, he strongly supported the Finance Bill 2023, which introduced new taxes, including the 3% Housing Levy. At the time, he defended the levy as necessary for development. Now, he calls it a corrupt initiative meant to benefit a few individuals in power.
Political analysts believe Gachagua’s shift may be a survival tactic after being sidelined in government. As his influence wanes, he appears to be positioning himself as the potential leader of a new opposition movement.

Critics, however, view his attacks as desperate and accuse him of hypocrisy. Despite the backlash, Gachagua remains resolute, claiming he is now speaking out on behalf of the people and that he was misled into supporting policies he no longer believes serve Kenyans' best interests.
