Ugandan socialite and businesswoman Zari Hassan has chosen to adopt their husbands' name after marriage.

Zari recently revealed on her Instagram stories that she now goes by the name Mrs Lutaaya, her husband Shakib Cham Lutaaya's last name.

Zari Hassan revealed this after she posted a mirror selfie with the title "Mrs Lutaaya" On April 16, 2023, Zari Hassan and Shakib Cham Lutaaya truly wed through a private Nikah ceremony held in Pretoria, South Africa.

Zari Hassan and Shakib Cham Lutaaya shared glimpses of their wedding on their respective Instagram accounts, showing a small and intimate ceremony attended by only a few relatives and close friends.


The couple had been dating for a year and celebrated their first anniversary on March 1, 2023, before tying the knot on April 16, 2023, in a private Nikah ceremony held in Pretoria, South Africa.

However, the couple came out in May 2022, and Zari visited Shakib Cham's parents a few months later.

The decision of whether or not to adopt their husband's surname is one of the major dilemmas that women face in today's society when they get married.

Traditionally, a woman is expected to take on her husband's surname after the exchange of vows. However, there are women who choose not to do so and instead keep their own surnames.

NTV Swahili news anchor Fridah Mwaka is one such woman who decided not to use her husband's surname after they got married in November 2019. Mwaka stated that she and her husband, Samuel Nguma Ndhuli, had agreed beforehand that she would not change her surname.


In today's world, one of the important decisions that women face after getting married is whether to take their husband's last name or not. While it is a common tradition to take on the husband's surname, some women prefer to keep their maiden name. 


Fridah Mwaka, a famous NTV Swahili news anchor, is an example of a woman who decided not to take her husband's name after they got married in November 2019. Fridah explained that she wanted to maintain her professional brand as Fridah Mwaka, which is separate from her personal life.
