During an interview with Lyn Ngugi, Maureen revealed that she was depressed and could not think about anything else because she was in pain.
The love triangle between Maureen Frankie and Corazon rocked the Kenyan entertainment scene a few years when both sides accused each other of being the cause of their separation.
“Every day I couldn’t think about anything else. I would just zone out and think: what if I wasn’t here, what if I could stop feeling this pain,” she said on an episode of the Lyn Ngugi show.

Maureen claimed she was diagnosed with severe clinical depression and anxiety and that throughout the breakup, she received up to 100 direct messages from strangers mocking her and advising her to move on, claiming she wasn't the only one who had gone through a split.
She stated that to preserve her mental health, she gave away her phone and passwords for someone else to manage. She recommended anyone in a similar situation to stay true to themselves.
Waititu claimed it took her a while to realize her mental health was bad, and she would walk from one place to another and wonder how she got there. She would leave her car door open and drive away, sometimes feeling paralyzed on one side of her body.
It took her buddy telling her she needed to see a psychiatrist to realize something was wrong.
Waititu stated that she was in a poor position when she began therapy, with patches of baldness and having lost much weight due to sadness.
She stated that one of the reasons that convinced her that she needed to fight for her mental health was that no one else could take care of her sons the way she did, and she knew she had to heal to take care of them.
She said she is healed from depression and focused on her life.
