President William Ruto has named Peter Ndegwa, the Chief Executive Officer of Safaricom, as the new Chancellor of Meru University of Science and Technology. According to a Gazette Notice released on Friday, November 3, Ndegwa's appointment is for a five-year term. His tenure officially started on November 1.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 38 (1) (a) of the Universities Act, 2012, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint–to be the Chancellor of the Meru University of Science and Technology, for five (5) years, with effect from November 1, 2023,” the notice read in part.
As a result, Peter Ndegwa, the CEO of Safaricom, will take over from James Mwangi, the CEO of Equity Bank, who was appointed as the Chancellor of the Open University of Kenya earlier this year.
Additionally, the President has appointed Sophia Abdi Noor as the Chairperson of the National Council for Children Services for a term of three years, effective from November 3.
Furthermore, the President appointed Prof. Lukoye Atwoli as the non-executive chairperson of the board of directors of Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital. His tenure in this role, as stated in the notice, will commence on November 3.
