The operator of the platinum mine in South Africa reported on Tuesday that an elevator that was supposed to bring the workers back to the surface had broken down, killing eleven and injuring numerous others.
At its mine in Rustenburg, northwest of Johannesburg, Impala Platinum reported that a "serious accident" occurred late on Monday afternoon as workers finished their shift and exited one of the shafts.
"Our hearts are heavy for the lives lost and the individuals affected by this devastating accident," Impala Platinum's (Implats) CEO, Nico Muller, said in a statement.
"We are deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of our colleagues and are in the process of ensuring all next of kin have been contacted."

According to the company, 75 employees suffered injuries; they were treated and admitted to nearby hospitals.
A representative for Implants, Johan Theron, told AFP that while some people had severe injuries, the majority had fractures to their legs and ankles, and some had only minor scratches on them.
The company said the lift hoisting workers "unexpectedly started descending" at approximately 1:50 p.m. on Monday, which is when the accident occurred.
"Its rapid descent was stopped by the conveyance counterweight becoming trapped by the jack catches," it said in a statement.
