A three-story building collapsed when residents of Piai and the nearby Mwea-east neighborhoods in Kirinyaga County woke up.

Building work had been suspended for two months, according to the Piai residents, led by Michael Chomba.

“We were shocked to find a three storey building that had stalled for two months on the ground and what we want to know is whether there was somebody inside the collapsed building like a watchman as the main gate locked and the compound is surrounded by iron sheet,” Chomba said.

The chairman of the boda boda group in Piai, Ken Mugo, said that when he passed by the building on Monday on his way to Murinduko, it was still standing but had since collapsed.'

“I still cannot believe the building has collapsed, at first I thought it was an earthquake,” Mugo said.

According to nearby residents, the building that collapsed came down just after one in the morning.

“It was raining when I heard a bang and thought it was a thunderstorm only to find a collapsed building today morning,” Mary Muthoni said.

When Citizen Digital arrived on Tuesday morning, neither the National Construction Authority (NCA) nor county government officers had yet to show up.

Inside, the main gate was still locked.
