Kapuothe residents in Kisumu County are calling on the hippopotamuses roaming through their homes and destroying their farms.

Hippos are known to go from Lake Victoria to graze throughout the night, attributed to the lake's growing levels.

"Once the sun sets, our village transforms into a playground for hippos under the cover of darkness," a local, Michael Odero, told Citizen TV.

He said that the hippos walk about people's homes at night.

"Their nightly ventures begin at around 9 p.m., stretching until the break of dawn, invoking a state of unease," he said.

Tucked in apprehension, the community has now called authorities, including the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), to intervene quickly.

"Our once flourishing crops now stand in ruin thanks to the the heavy-footed treads of the hippos," Peres said.

They have asked KWS to resolve the human-wildlife conflict by taming the wildlife.
