A 4-year-old child has been burnt alive in a house fire at a rented property on Ndeda Island in Bondo sub-county.
Master Zedrick Ogutu was in residence with his mother, Glorious Awuor, when the fire broke out at 3 a.m.
According to Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo, the situation was reported to Bondo Police Station by Patrick Gimona, Assistant Chief of Uyawi Sub-location.
He added that police officers arrived at the scene and discovered that the fire began at 3 a.m. in Vitalis Ogutu's leased property. He was out fishing in Lake Victoria, leaving his wife and son alone in the house.
Kimaiyo reported that the woman, Glorious Awuor, suffered burns on her arms and lower limbs while attempting to save her child.
The county police chief reported that property valued at an unknown amount, including a motorbike, gas cylinder, one boat engine, and household items, was destroyed.
He claimed that the source of the fire is believed to be a failure in a solar battery put in the home.
The mother was transferred to Ndeda Island Dispensary for treatment, while the juvenile's body was sent to Bondo Sub-County Hospital Mortuary for autopsy.
