The Kilifi county government demolished residences worth millions that had been built on government land in the Mabirikani region.
County government enforcement agents and other authorities searched the property of the Kilifi social services, which former government officials reportedly seized.
According to reports, the grabbers were given a notice but did not adhere to it, leaving their renters stranded.
One of the buildings was purportedly owned by a former Kilifi senior social services officer, while another belonged to a former Kilifi County physical planner.
Tenants purportedly informed by their landlords and landlady that there would be no destruction are also affected.
Some people supported the destruction, claiming the area needed to be reclaimed. According to reports, the site is planned for the building of the county headquarters.
Kilifi governor Gideon Mungaro said the demolition was necessary since they issued numerous notices long ago, but the tenants refused to comply.
He stated that the site belonged to the social services department and had been designated to construct county headquarters, but the inhabitants refused to leave.
Mung'aro stated that the social service property was seven acres but was taken, leaving just four acres.
He said that people who seized the land were not foreigners but former government officials who assigned themselves territory they knew belonged to the government.
He advised anyone who constructed on government land should leave because they will be demolished.
