An improvised explosive device (IED) that went off in the middle of Elwak town, Mandera County, on Monday is thought to have killed multiple people.
Five people were reported seriously injured in the mid-morning incident; four of them were non-locals and one local, according to first responders.
Witnesses report that there was also a lot of gunfire at the residential property that was affected. This residential property houses non-local employees who work in the area, such as teachers, nurses, and police officers.

The Elwak Administration Police (AP) camp is across from the property.
Equity Bank announced the suspension of operations at the Elwak branch following the explosion. The bank however said its branch staff were safe.
