The 5-year-old girl's body has been discovered in Kirinyaga County after her mother leaped into the Nyamindi River with her.
Johnson Wachira, the Gichugu sub-county police commander, reports that Precious Wairimu's body was found at Gichogo village on Saturday night. The body was observed floating inside by locals collecting water from the river.
“We are working together with the local residents to see the body of her mother, Maureen Wangui is discovered,” Wachira said.
Wangui, 29, threw herself into the Nyamindi River on Saturday morning while her 5-year-old child was strapped to her back.
Wangui was observed by a watchman at the Kainamoi coffee factory throwing herself into the river, according to her uncle Stephen Maembe. The guard alerted the authorities after setting off an alarm.

The villagers of Kabiro-ini are shocked by the incident. According to her grandmother Fridah Njoki, Wangui and her daughter visited her because her parents are government employees who work in Embu County.
“She was a very good girl and her baby too. I wonder why she decided to take her own life,” her grandmother said.
The girl's body has been brought to the Kibugi funeral home while the locals carry on looking for Wangui's body.
