President William Ruto has announced that the 40,000 households displaced by the ongoing floods will receive a Kes 10,000 stipend.
Speaking in Mathare, Ruto assured the displaced families will be given alternative land as restoration of riparian land starts.
“For all of the 40,000 households that have been evacuated because of their safety, the government will provide a stipend of 10,000 shillings to each household to look for temporary alternative settlements until further guidance by the government.”
Additionally, the Head of State said the government has set aside Kes 1 billion for countrywide reconstruction of schools damaged by floods.
So far, more than 228 people have been killed, and thousands of others have been displaced by the ongoing heavy rains and flooding nationwide.
According to the Interior Ministry, the severe rains that have caused extensive floods and landslides across the country in recent weeks are expected to intensify in May.
“More flooding is expected in low-lying areas, riparian areas, and urban areas, while landslides/mudslides may occur in areas with steep slopes, escarpments, and ravines."
Floods have devastated homes, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure throughout East Africa's greatest economy.
