The Nairobi City County Executive Committee has approved the sale of properties that owe the county land taxes.
A Cabinet meeting led by Governor Johnson Sakaja approved the imposition of caveats on all debt properties to restrict any transactions, including subdivision, merger, and transfer.
The CEC also allowed the issue of agency notices for properties generating rental revenue, requiring renters to pay rent directly to the Nairobi City County Government until unpaid rates are entirely cleared.
The lawsuit follows the expiration of the second waiver for land rates, penalties, and interest, which required the owners to settle the principal.
“The recovery process should be as efficient as possible and be handled by county internal lawyers to avoid incurring huge legal fees that are normally pegged on the value of land in dispute,” the Governor said.
The county government recently released a list of rate defaulters and granted a one-month grace period to pay the principal amount while waiving interest and penalties.
The Governor instructed all County Executive Committee Members and Chief Officers to provide automobiles and other resources required for income generation.
Nairobi has hiked land prices by Ksh3.255,969,569 today, compared to a target of Ksh.7 billion with two weeks remaining in the fiscal year. Total income is Ksh.12,262,100,000, the most collected by any county government since devolution. The previous record of Ksh.12.1 billion was reached in 2015–2016.
Governor Sakaja praised the county revenue team for exceeding the target, even after suspending enforcement to allow clients time to comply.
Meanwhile, the Governor has asked the Environment sector to beautify Langata Cemetery.
“Many people have sentimental feelings towards Langata Cemetery as almost everyone knows someone who is buried there. The ‘green army’ should use the resources already at their disposal and the plans at the City Park tree nursery to beautify the cemetery,” the Governor said.
The County Executive Committee Member for Finance was asked to produce a circular outlining local and international travel criteria.
