Kasper Hjulmand announced his resignation as head coach of Denmark on Friday, following their exit in the Euro 2024 round of 16, emphasizing the need for fresh perspectives.

At 52 years old, Hjulmand had held the position since May 2020. He notably guided Denmark to the semi-finals of the European Championship three years ago but faced an early exit in the 2022 World Cup group stage.

"I believe it's in the team's best interest for a new face with new ideas to take charge and write the next significant chapter for this remarkable team. Therefore, it's best for someone else to lead the team forward," stated Hjulmand in a statement released by the Danish Football Association (DBU).

"This decision isn't about me. It's about what's best for the team," he added.

Morten Wieghorst, Hjulmand's assistant coach, will step in as interim head coach until the end of the year, overseeing upcoming Nations League matches against Switzerland, Serbia, and Euro 2024 champions Spain.

"We have an exceptional talent pool in Danish football, and I'm eagerly anticipating the challenges ahead this autumn," commented Wieghorst, the former Celtic defender. "Together with the staff and players, I am fully committed to achieving success in these exciting Nations League fixtures."
