A dispute over the composition of the selection panel could disrupt the recruitment process for Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners.

The National Liberal Party (NLP), part of the Azimio la Umoja coalition, has threatened legal action after Koki Muli replaced Dr. Augustus Muli's name.

NLP claims that Dr. Augustus Muli was lawfully elected to the panel through a process overseen by IEBC officials, with his candidacy forwarded by the Political Parties Liaison Committee (PPLC).

Addressing the media, NLP leader Augustus Muli and Secretary General Omondi Koyoo accused Azimio Secretary General Junet Mohamed and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka of undermining the PPLC’s mandate by substituting Dr. Muli with Koki Muli.

The party argues that Mohamed and Musyoka have overstepped their authority and appealed for intervention from National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula to resolve the issue. Koyoo and Muli emphasized their determination to secure Dr. Muli's inclusion in the selection panel, even if it requires legal action to halt the current process.

This controversy arises as President William Ruto prepares to officially announce the selection panel members, initiating the hiring process for new IEBC commissioners. NLP's threat to move to court highlights the growing tensions and challenges in ensuring a fair and transparent recruitment process.

The unfolding situation underscores the critical need for adherence to lawful and procedural norms in appointing IEBC commissioners, which has significant implications for Kenya’s electoral integrity. Stakeholders are urged to address the issue promptly to avoid further disruptions and maintain public trust in the electoral system.

This dispute spotlights the internal dynamics and conflicts within the Azimio la Umoja coalition and the broader political landscape, potentially impacting the credibility of the upcoming IEBC commissioner appointments.
