In an effort to assist traders who were severely impacted by the recent fire at Toi Market, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has donated 5,000 iron sheets.

To further ease the burden on the affected traders, Governor Sakaja announced a three-month waiver on daily market fees to help them recover from the losses caused by the frequent fires. "Due to the fire losses, I have directed that you will not pay daily charges for three months to recover from the loss," he stated.

The fire, which broke out last week, completely destroyed the market and tragically claimed the lives of four people. During his visit to the site to assess the damage, Governor Sakaja expressed deep sympathy for the traders and pledged his continued support during this challenging time.

"I will never abandon my people," the Governor said. "I will personally support you to ensure that Toi Market is rebuilt and that no one is displaced."

Along with the donation of iron sheets, Governor Sakaja announced that the county government has allocated KSh 100 million for the market's reconstruction. The funds will also be used to build a perimeter wall around the market, a project that will involve collaboration between county officers and the local community.

"Youths in this area will have the opportunity to work on building this perimeter wall; it’s a job opportunity," he noted.

Despite encountering a hostile reception during a previous visit, Governor Sakaja reiterated his commitment to standing by the traders in their time of need.

"Even when things got tough last time, I didn’t run away. I calmly walked out because you are my people, and we must support each other," he said.

The construction of the perimeter wall and the market is set to begin immediately, offering a glimmer of hope to the traders as they start to rebuild their businesses.
