Tesla has announced a recall of approximately 9,100 Model X SUVs in the U.S. due to concerns over roof trim that could potentially detach, posing a road hazard.

This recall affected the 2016 Model X vehicles, the second of their kind since 2020.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the front and center roof cosmetic trim pieces might have been installed without proper primer, increasing the risk of them separating from the vehicle. If not addressed, this issue could lead to dangerous road conditions and elevate the risk of accidents.

Tesla has indicated that a supplier process change in July 2016 addressed this problem in later models. Tesla will perform tests on the trim adhesion for the affected vehicles and reattach any loose pieces at no cost to the owners.

Since 2022, Tesla has been investigating reports of trim separation on vehicles that had undergone the earlier recall fix. The company conducted extensive aging tests involving heat and humidity, concluding that the 2020 remedy did not detect and address the issue entirely.

Tesla has acknowledged around 170 related reports and claims but clarified that no crashes or injuries were linked to this recall. This recall is notable for Tesla, which typically resolves issues via over-the-air software updates.

In the first half of the year, Tesla recalled nearly 2.6 million vehicles due to various safety concerns, ranking second only to Ford, which has recalled about 3.6 million cars in the U.S. during the same period, according to recall management platform Bizzycar.
