On Sunday, September 8, a major fire broke out at Njia Boys Secondary School in Igembe Central  Meru County, destroying valuable property and turning the Jamhuri Dormitory to ashes.

Strong flames could be seen overtaking the dormitory in the video footage from the incident as local supporters helped the firefighters who were fighting to put out the fire. To put out the fire, some volunteers could be seen bringing in buckets of water. There were police officials there to lead the firefighters and coordinate the emergency response.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but the swift response from emergency services helped prevent further escalation. Fortunately, no fatalities or injuries were reported during the incident.

There have been previous fires at Njia Boys High School. A similar event in 2019 resulted in the death of a student, who was discovered dead following a roll call.

The latest Njia Boys fire occurred just one day after another tragedy at Hillside Endarasha Academy and Isiolo Girls High School, where a dormitory fire claimed the lives of twenty-one young students. Teachers and parents are worried about the spate of fires in different schools, particularly in this crucial third trimester of the school year.
